Adaptive AI frameworks for defence training and operational decision-making
Wargaming is a cornerstone of defence training and operational planning, enabling personnel to develop situational awareness, test decision-making under uncertainty, and rehearse responses to complex, evolving threat scenarios. Modern wargaming demands exercises that scale in complexity, accommodate heterogeneous skill levels, and rapidly reconfigure to reflect shifting operational contexts – challenges that align closely with problems the games and interactive systems research community has worked on for decades.
The SDU Metaverse Lab brings directly transferable expertise in AI-driven game systems, adaptive difficulty and content generation, player behaviour modelling, and data-driven evaluation of decision-making in complex strategic environments. We are developing AI-augmented wargaming frameworks that adapt scenario complexity and adversary behaviour in real time to the trainee, enabling personalised training at scale. This work complements sensor- and satellite-driven situational awareness research by closing the loop from data acquisition to human decision-making and operational readiness.
We are actively seeking partners across defence, security, and allied sectors to co-develop this research programme.
