Dive into understanding and designing metaverse experiences for gaming, learning, and healthcare

This course invites you to explore what “the Metaverse” really means by building real prototypes that use cutting-edge technologies. Think VR, AR, MR, digital twins, AI, robotics, embedded sensors – or a mix, depending on what you choose.

In small groups, you will design and build a “metaverse experience,” applied to fields like healthcare, games, education or simulation-based training.

The course balances theory and hands-on practice: you will both learn core ideas about emerging technologies and build a working prototype. At the end, you and your teammates will write up a project report (including methodology, results and reflections) and present your work. By the end, you should be able to design interactive systems, combine different technologies into a unified prototype, and critically evaluate whether your metaverse idea works – especially for games, learning or health-related applications.

What You Will Learn:

  • Core concepts of the Metaverse (e.g., XR, digital twins, Social/Cultural Dimensions)

  • Design methods tailored for metaverse environments

  • How to combine emerging technologies such as hardware, XR, and AI

Course Overview:

  • ~5 ECTS theory (concepts, theory, methods)

  • ~5 ECTS group project on a self-defined research Metaverse project

  • Oral group examination based on project report
